Chinese 5 Spice Stew
Ingredients:
1 1/2 lbs beef stew meat, cut into 1-inch cubes
1 tablespoon Chinese 5 spice powder
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon black pepper
2 tablespoons olive oil
3 cloves garlic, minced
3 cups beef broth
2 large carrots, chopped into bite-size pieces
2 potatoes, chopped into bite-size pieces
1 tablespoon soy sauce
2 tablespoons cornstarch
2 tablespoons water
2 tablespoons fresh cilantro, chopped
Instructions:
1. In a bowl, mix together the Chinese 5 spice powder, salt, and black pepper. Coat the beef cube with the mixture.
2. Heat the vegetable oil in a large pot over medium-high heat. Sear the beef on all sides until browned, about 3-4 minutes per side.
3. Add the onion and garlic to the pot and sauté until softened, about 3-4 minutes.
4. Pour in the beef broth, scraping the bottom of the pot to release any browned bits. Add the carrots and potatoes.
5. Bring the stew to a boil and then reduce the heat to low. Cover and simmer for 1 1/2 hours, or until the beef is tender.
6. In a small bowl, whisk together the soy sauce, cornstarch, and water. Stir the mixture into the stew and let simmer uncovered for an additional 15 minutes, or until the stew has thickened.
7. Ladle the stew into bowls and garnish with fresh cilantro. Serve hot.
